Sarah broke barriers by becoming one of the first female auto diagnostics specialists in Kampala after completing our Women in Automotive program.
When Sarah Namugwanya enrolled in Car Tribe Uganda's Women in Automotive program, she faced skepticism from her family and community. "Everyone told me that car repair was not for women," Sarah recalls. "But I was determined to pursue my interest in automotive technology."
As one of only three women in her cohort, Sarah faced additional challenges but quickly proved her aptitude for diagnostics and electrical systems. Our instructors noted her exceptional analytical skills and attention to detail.
Specializing in Modern Diagnostics
While many of her peers focused on traditional mechanical repairs, Sarah developed a passion for electronic diagnostics - a growing need in Uganda as more modern vehicles enter the market.
"I realized that computer diagnostics was going to be the future of auto repair," Sarah explains. "And it's an area where being a woman doesn't matter - what matters is your technical knowledge and problem-solving ability."
Breaking Industry Barriers
After completing her training, Sarah initially struggled to find employment as many shop owners were reluctant to hire a female technician. Car Tribe Uganda worked with industry partners to secure her an internship at a major dealership in Kampala.
Within three months, Sarah had diagnosed several complex issues that had stumped other technicians. Her ability to precisely identify electronic faults saved customers time and money, quickly building her reputation.
Becoming a Role Model
Today, Sarah works as the lead diagnostics specialist at one of Kampala's premier auto service centers. She has become an ambassador for our Women in Automotive program, regularly speaking to groups of young women about opportunities in the field.
"The most rewarding part is seeing the surprise on customers' faces when they realize a woman solved their car problems," Sarah says with a smile. "That moment of changing perceptions makes all the challenges worthwhile."
Since Sarah's breakthrough, enrollment of women in our automotive programs has increased by 40%, with many citing her story as their inspiration.
